General Things Your Nail Salon Should Be Doing

Nobody expects to lose a limb after going to a nail salon. One of our clients suffered a severe toe infection after getting a pedicure in unsanitary conditions. The infection ultimately resulted in the amputation of this client's leg.

So, how can YOU avoid ending up in this horrifying situation?

Nail salon safety is so important to consider, and it is VERY often overlooked. Getting a manicure or pedicure is part of a monthly or bi-monthly self-care regime for most people. Salons are packed and busier than ever, leaving little room for proper sanitization between each client. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind for a safe nail salon visit:

  • Any metal tools such as cuticle nippers, cuticle pushers, and nail cutters should be sanitized between each client. Sanitized tools should be properly stored in a labeled "CLEAN IMPLEMENTS" container. Likewise, any dirty/contaminated tools should be stored in a properly labeled "DIRTY IMPLEMENTS" container.
  • Items like nail files and buffing blocks are single-use and should be disposed after every client because they cannot be properly sanitized according to board standards.
  • Always choose a nail salon with licensed technicians! Certification ensures that professionals have undergone proper training in hygiene protocols and nail care techniques.
  • Foot Spa Maintenance: If the salon offers pedicure services, pedicure tubs/spas must be cleaned and disinfected between each use. Removable parts should be scrubbed, and pipes sanitized to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi.
  • Cleanliness is Key! Upon entering the salon, take a moment to observe its cleanliness. Surfaces, floors, and equipment should appear tidy and well-maintained. Pay attention to the overall hygiene standards of the salon!

Lastly, listen to your instincts! If something doesn't seem right, say something or leave! It isn't worth the risk of an infection or even worse, losing a limb. Your health is valuable and worth it!
